The days people fly into Doha for.

Dune bashing on the Sealine sand, the salt water that runs inland to the Saudi border, a wooden dhow under the skyline, and the museums that turned a connection into a stopover.

Every safari here starts the same way, on the tarmac south of Mesaieed where the drivers let the air out of the tyres. What changes is how long you stay out and how far the convoy pushes toward the water.

The classic

Half a day on the Sealine dunes

4 hours· from $12· hotel pickup

Out after lunch, an hour of ridges taken sideways, a camel and a sandboard at the camp, back on the Corniche in time for dinner.

The long way

All the way down to Khor Al Adaid

Full day· 60 km south· no sealed road

The same dunes, then another hour of driving to the place where salt water sits against the sand and the far bank is Saudi Arabia.

The night

Sleeping out at the desert camp

Overnight· from $193· dinner and breakfast

The convoys leave at four, the camp empties at eight, and what is left is a tent, a fire and more stars than the Corniche will ever show you.

Between flights

A Doha layover is long enough to leave the airport.

Hamad puts you fifteen minutes from Souq Waqif and under an hour from the dune belt, and most passports clear immigration on arrival. Five hours is a city tour with time to spare; eight is the desert and back.

Khor Al Adaid

The Inland Sea is the one place the Gulf reaches into the desert.

Sixty kilometres south of Doha the dunes stop against salt water and the far bank belongs to Saudi Arabia. Nothing sealed goes in; the last stretch is driven across sand, which is why every trip down there is a safari as well as a view.

A border you could swim

Khor Al Adaid

The Gulf pushes twenty kilometres inland here and stops dead against a wall of dunes, with Saudi Arabia on the far bank. UNESCO lists it as a natural reserve. There is no road to the water and no bus that goes there, so the last ridge is taken in a 4x4 with the tyres let down, and the whole thing appears at once as the car tips over the crest.

The Sealine belt

Dune Bashing

The sand south of Mesaieed is high, soft and unusually close to a capital city, which is why the safari is Qatar's default afternoon rather than an expedition. Drivers deflate at the edge of the tarmac and then spend an hour crossing ridges sideways. Camels, sandboards and a shaded camp wait on the other side of the belt.

Before the oil

The Wooden Dhow

Qatar dived for pearls until the 1930s, and the boats that did it are still built by hand along the bay. The evening runs go out from the Corniche with the towers lighting up behind them, which is the only angle from which Doha reads as one city instead of a row of separate buildings.

May to September

When Doha passes 45 degrees, the day moves to the evening.

Summer here is a heat season rather than a wet one, and it rewrites the timetable instead of cancelling it. Safaris shift to sundown, the Corniche fills after dark, the souq wakes up around nine, and the museums keep their own weather.
